Journal Check
Type a journal name, an ISSN or a DOI. See what NLM, OpenAlex, and Crossref record about it, with the source and date of each fact.
What each fact means
- Publisher: The publisher name Crossref holds for the journal.
- Indexed in MEDLINE: NLM's catalogue record states whether the journal is currently indexed for MEDLINE. "Not currently indexed" repeats that status, which does not tell a journal never indexed from one that stopped.
- Publication status: Shown only when the NLM record gives an end year: "Ceased" and the years NLM lists.
- Listed in DOAJ: Whether OpenAlex records the journal as listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals. "OpenAlex records no DOAJ listing" is the statement of OpenAlex, not of the DOAJ.
- Works in OpenAlex: The number of works OpenAlex has indexed for the journal. It counts coverage in OpenAlex.
- Host organisation: The organisation OpenAlex records as hosting the journal. It can differ from the publisher Crossref holds.
- Records Crossref marks as retractions: The number of records Crossref marks as retractions for the ISSNs of the journal. The count mixes retraction notices with the articles they retract.
What this page cannot tell you
- This page does not judge a journal or advise whether to cite it. Each row repeats what one registry holds.
- A registry can hold a journal under an ISSN this lookup did not ask about, so a missing record is not proof of absence.
- The page cannot tell you how a journal runs peer review, what it charges or who sits on its board. Ask the publisher.
- A count of zero means Crossref marks no record of the journal as a retraction. It says nothing about retractions Crossref was never given.
Frequently asked questions
What does it mean when a row says no record found?
That registry holds no record under the ISSNs checked. MEDLINE covers biomedicine and life sciences, so journals in other fields often sit outside it. For DOAJ, the answer is that of OpenAlex.
Where do the facts come from?
Each row names its source: the NLM journal catalogue, OpenAlex or Crossref. The date shows the day the lookup ran.
Can I look up a journal by DOI?
Yes. A DOI leads to the journal through the ISSN of the work. When a name matches several journals, the page lists them with their years so you can choose.
