How IEEE formats a reference

  • Authors are written as initials followed by the surname: Y. LeCun. Names are not inverted.
  • The article title is in quotation marks, with the comma inside the closing mark.
  • The journal title is italic and followed by vol., no., and pp. with the full page range.
  • The month is abbreviated and comes before the year: May 2015.
  • A journal article ends with doi: and the identifier, not a full link.
  • Books give the place and publisher before the year. IEEE asks for the city, state, and country, as in New York, NY, USA, so extend the place when your source lists only the city.

Who uses IEEE style

IEEE style is defined by the IEEE Editorial Style Manual and used across electrical engineering, electronics, and computer science. Citations are numbers in square brackets, assigned in the order sources first appear, and the same number is reused each time that source is cited. The reference list follows that numeric order, not the alphabet. To point at a specific page, add it inside the brackets, as in [1, p. 438].

Frequently asked questions

How are IEEE references ordered?

By first appearance in the text. The first source you cite is [1], the second is [2], and the list at the end follows the same sequence. Citing a source again reuses its original number.

Can I paste BibTeX from my LaTeX project?

Yes. Paste one or more BibTeX entries and CiteTools returns the formatted IEEE references, which helps when a venue asks for a Word submission. LaTeX users can keep the .bib file and use the IEEEtran bibliography style.

Why is the month included?

IEEE references for journal articles give the abbreviated month before the year when the publisher supplies it. May stays whole and September is written Sept., the form IEEE uses.
