How ASA formats a reference

  • The first author is inverted and the other authors keep normal order, all with full first names: LeCun, Yann, Yoshua Bengio, and Geoffrey Hinton.
  • The year follows the authors, and the reference list runs in alphabetical order by the first author.
  • Titles use title case. Article and chapter titles take quotation marks, and book titles are italic.
  • The journal name is italic. Volume, issue, and pages run together without spaces: Nature 521(7553):436–44.
  • A page range keeps only the digits that change, so pages 436 to 444 are written 436–44.
  • A DOI closes an article as doi: and the number, with a period after it. A book gives its place and its publisher: New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

Who uses ASA style

ASA style comes from the Style Guide of the American Sociological Association, now in its 7th edition. Sociology courses and the ASA journals follow it, and so do many other social science courses. The guide builds on The Chicago Manual of Style. A citation in the text is the surname of the author and the year in parentheses. A page follows the year after a colon. Every source in the text needs an entry in the reference list, and every entry needs a citation in the text. The list is alphabetical.

Frequently asked questions

How does ASA write a page in the text?

After the year, with a colon and no space: (LeCun, Bengio, and Hinton 2015:438). Some guides add a comma and p, which ASA does not use. CiteTools writes the colon form.

How does ASA cite three or more authors?

ASA names up to three authors in the first citation, then shortens later citations to the first author and et al. A work with four or more authors takes et al. from the first citation. CiteTools writes the form of a first citation, so shorten later citations by hand.

Does ASA list every author in the reference list?

Yes. The ASA 7th edition handout of California State University Channel Islands says to write out all authors in the reference list, and CiteTools does. Some library guides cut a list of more than ten to seven and et al., so check the guide your course names.
