Your reference list starts here

Each source is checked against its published record, formatted in APA Style (7th Edition), and kept in this browser. No sign-up.

What CiteTools does

CiteTools builds your reference list. Paste a DOI, a web address, an ISBN, a PubMed ID, a BibTeX or RIS entry, or a reference copied from a paper. Each one becomes a row in your list. Paste up to 100 sources at once and each one is added on its own. To add a work by its title, paste the title alone and pick the work you mean from a short list. Choose APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard, IEEE, Vancouver, AMA, ACS, CSE, ASA, APSA or OSCOLA. Copy the list into Word or Google Docs with its italics. The list stays in your browser. It is free, shows no ads and needs no account.

Where the details come from

A DOI, an ISBN and a PubMed ID are read from their registered records. A web address is read from the details the page itself publishes. A reference you paste as text is compared with Crossref, DBLP, OpenAlex, Google Books, Open Library and K10plus, and a detail is filled in or corrected only when one of them holds a matching record.

What the four labels mean

Every source in your list carries one label.

  • Confirmed: A published record matched this reference. We filled in and corrected details from that record.
  • As written: This is formatted from the details you gave. We did not replace them with a registry record.
  • Not confirmed: We could not match this to one published record. Registries miss many real works, so this is not a sign the reference is wrong. Only what your text states is used, so check it against your source or add the DOI.
  • From the page: This citation comes from the details the page itself publishes. Check the author and the date against the page.

How each check works is on the methodology page.
