Citation Style Identifier
Paste one reference. CiteTools writes the same work in each style and names the style yours matches.
Frequently asked questions
Which styles can the identifier name?
It names 12 styles: APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard, IEEE, Vancouver, AMA, ACS, CSE, ASA, APSA, and OSCOLA. A reference in any other style, such as Turabian, reads as not matching one of ours.
Why does it sometimes name two styles?
Some styles print a work the same way. MLA and Chicago print a book alike, as do ASA and APSA. When two styles match equally well, the identifier names both.
How much can I paste?
One reference at a time, from 20 to 1500 characters. The identifier compares word order and punctuation and ignores capital letters, so a reference with a wrong detail can still match its style.
