Paste an ISBN to get a BibTeX entry
Why convert an ISBN to BibTeX
Book metadata is tedious to type into a .bib file. Paste the ISBN and CiteTools looks the book up in Open Library and Google Books, then writes an @book entry with the author or editor, full title, publisher, year, and the ISBN. Both ISBN-10 and ISBN-13 work, with or without hyphens. A publisher name that contains a comma or the word and is wrapped in braces, so biblatex does not split it into two publishers.
How the ISBN to BibTeX conversion works
- Find the ISBN above the barcode or on the copyright page.
- Paste it into the converter. CiteTools retrieves the book record.
- Copy the @book entry into your .bib file and compare the publisher and edition with your copy.
Sample BibTeX entry
Every entry starts with its type and a citation key, followed by one field per line. Authors are joined with the word and, page ranges use a double hyphen, and capital letters that must survive a bibliography style are wrapped in braces. In LaTeX, cite the entry with \cite and its key.

}Frequently asked questions
Which edition does the entry describe?
The one the ISBN belongs to. Each edition and format of a book has its own ISBN, so paste the number printed in the copy you used.
The lookup found nothing. What now?
Some regional and self-published ISBNs are missing from Open Library and Google Books. Paste the title and author as plain text instead and CiteTools builds the entry from that.
Can I cite a single chapter?
An ISBN identifies the whole book, so the result is an @book entry. For a chapter, change the type to @incollection and add the chapter author, the chapter title in the title field, the book title in booktitle, and the pages.
