Why convert a DOI to RIS

RIS is the import format that Zotero, EndNote, Mendeley, and most library databases share. A DOI is the shortest way to a complete RIS record: CiteTools reads the registry record for the DOI, from CrossRef for most journals, and writes each field on its own tagged line. Authors keep their order, the first and last page go into SP and EP, and the publication date is written as year, month, and day, with the month and the day padded to two digits when the registry gives them. The record type follows the work, so a journal article becomes JOUR, a book BOOK, a chapter CHAP, and a conference paper CONF.

How the DOI to RIS conversion works

  1. Paste a DOI, with or without the https://doi.org prefix. The example on this page is 10.1038/nature14539.
  2. CiteTools fetches the registry record and writes an RIS record of the matching type, such as JOUR or BOOK.
  3. Copy the record, or download it as a .ris file and import it into your reference manager. Paste up to 100 DOIs, one per line, to export a whole list.

Sample RIS record

Every record opens with TY, the type of the work, and closes with ER. Between them each line holds one two-character tag and one value: AU for each author, TI for the title, T2 for the journal or the book a chapter sits in, PY for the year, SP and EP for the first and last page, and DO for the DOI. A reference manager reads these tags on import, so the record needs no editing first. A record built from a registry can carry more lines than the sample, such as SN for the ISSN and LA for the language.

Frequently asked questions

Which reference managers read the RIS record?

Zotero, EndNote, Mendeley, and RefWorks all import RIS. In Zotero choose File, then Import, and select the .ris file. In EndNote choose File, then Import, and pick the Reference Manager (RIS) option.

Why are the pages split into SP and EP?

RIS stores the first page in SP and the last page in EP. A range written into SP alone can lose the last page on import. CiteTools writes both tags and completes a shortened last page, so 436-44 becomes 436 and 444.

Is the record checked against the registry?

Yes. A DOI names one registered work and the record is built from that registration, so the result is marked Confirmed. If the DOI is not registered, CiteTools says so and writes no record.
